Job Description
The Office of Information Technology at the University of Nevada, Reno is recruiting for either an Assistant Network Engineer, Network Engineer or Senior Network Engineer. The Network Engineer is responsible for analysis, design, implementation, maintenance, and support of communications infrastructure for the University's campuses including offsite locations, which includes copper and fiber wired and wireless networks facilitating data, voice, and video. The network infrastructure includes, but is not limited to routers, switches, access points, firewalls, and other network traffic engineering equipment as well as servers and software which provide core network services and functionality.
The Assistant Network Engineer is responsible for operations and maintenance of network operating systems, network security practices, and network issues troubleshooting. The position is responsible for installs and troubleshoots problems dealing with network communications and provides supporting and monitoring services. The position ensures compliance with computer network communication protocols and maintains Virtual Local Area Networks (VLAN's). Individuals in this role engage in routine tasks, that have a clear set of standards and protocols, they seek assistance and direction from more senior members of the organization when dealing with tasks that fall outside of those clear guidelines.

The position is responsible for maintaining "best practices" procedures and policies for use in the network operations group. The individual implements network security design. The position maintains Virtual Private Networks (VPN's) and data communications equipment. The position monitors intrusion detection/prevention systems logs and data encryption of network. The position manages assigned projects, provides guidance to those in the Assistant Network Engineer role and supervises work of student workers.
The Senior Network Engineer works to design and improve the network to meet all defined network requirements and other security-related requirements. The position is responsible for developing and maintaining "best practices" procedures and policies for use in the network operations group. The individual creates and implements network security design and systems integration. The position configures Virtual Private Networks (VPN's) and data communications equipment. The position monitors intrusion detection/prevention systems logs and data encryption of network. The position manages assigned projects and supervises work of assistant/network engineers and graduate students.
Required Qualifications
Assistant Network Engineer
Associate's Degree from an accredited institution and two (2) years of related work experience OR Bachelor's Degree one (1) year of related work experience OR Master's Degree from an accredited institution and one (1) year of related work experience in network operations and/or system administration.
Network Engineer
Associate's Degree from an accredited institution and five (5) years of related work experience OR Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and two (2) years of related work experience OR Master's Degree from an accredited institution and one (1) year of related work experience in network operations and/or system administration.
Senior Network Engineer
Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and four (4) years of related professional work experience OR Master's Degree from an accredited institution and two (2) years of related professional work experience in network operations and/or system administration including TCP/IP, router and switch management and administration.
Preferred Qualifications
Assistant Network Engineer
CompTIA Network+
Network Engineer
Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) or equivalent.
Senior Network Engineer
CCNA, Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE), or equivalent.
Priority will be given to candidates with experience in one or more of the following technologies: Software Defined Networking (SDN), Openflow, SD-WAN, Science DMZs, Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM), VoIP, Internet of Things (IoT), High Performance Computing (HPC) networking, Border Gateway Protocol (BGP)
Schedule or Travel Requirements
Occasional work outside typical hours is required
Travel to conferences, training or other network locations is required

Candidates will be hired at the level that is comparable to their experience, knowledge, skills and abilities. Salary is competitive and commensurate with related education and experience.
Total Compensation
The total compensation package includes a competitive salary, moving allowance (if applicable), a rich retirement plan, health insurance options that include dental and vision, life insurance, thirty (30) days of sick leave provided upon start date and two (2) days of sick leave accrued per full month after the first year of service, two (2) days of annual leave accrued each full month, along with many other benefits.
